HOCKEY Malvern and Eastern Southland shared the Collier Trophy after drawing 1-all at the national schoolgirls’ hockey tournament at Takapuna yesterday. Eastern Southland scored its goal in the final shortly after half-time. Malvern replied with only seven minutes left on the clock. It was an exciting game and a great climax to the tournament which began on August 31. Malvern narrowly defeated Wairarapa 1-nil in its section semi-finals on Thursday, while Eastern Southland beat Horowhenua 3- in its semi-final clash. Wairarapa beat Horowhenua, 4- in the match for third. The Malvern goalie, Joanne Smart was selected for the South Island team to play the . North Island. South Island ■won 3-nil. RUGBY Southland and Otago took the honours at the South Island primary schoolboy’s rugby tournament at Lincoln College. Southland beat Canterbury Town, 4-0, to win the under45kg title, while Otago beat Canterbury Town, 19-3, to win the under-58kg section. Other last round results saw Canterbury Country beat Otago, 12-10, in the 45kg competition and Southland beat Canterbury Town, 10-7, in the 58kg section. grell (CT). Hawkes Bay beat Wellington, 25-7, in the final of the central region under-18 rugby tournament at Ruatoria yesterday. Third place went to Manawatu which beat Wairarapa-Bush, 19-14. Poverty Bay, with a 31-13 win against Taranaki, finished fifth, and Wanganui was seventh with a 38-13 win against Horowhenua. East Coast, the host was ninth. SOCCER Rotorua won the under-14 national boys’ soccer tournament at Hamilton and North City A was runner-up. RUGBY LEAGUE Auckland won the national under-17 rugby league title, beating Canterbury 20-nil in the final yesterday. Taranaki finished third after beating Waikato, 12-0. West Coast finished fifth after beating Hawkes Bay, 30-6. Wellington pipped Bay of Plenty for seventh place, winning 24-15 and Northland ended ninth after beating Manawatu, 20-12.
