Election result next Friday
A final result in the fluctuating battle for the Waitaki electorate is not expected until next Friday, said the returning officer, Mr Peter Bond, in Oamaru yesterday. The sitting Labour member of Parliament, Mr Jim Sutton, held a slender majority of 98 on election night over his National Party opponent, Mr Duncan Taylor.
Mr Sutton received 9456 votes to Mr Taylor’s 9358 votes.
Mr Bond said special votes were being accepted up until 7 p.m. on Tuesday, the obligatory 10 days after the election. At present 1500 ordinary votes and 150 overseas votes had been received and more were expected. Mr Bond and eight staff were now scrutinising the roll and would spend all of today on the time-consuming job. “There are 2270 people on the roll and its seems to us as though all of them voted.” However, once the deadline for special votes ended, the official count would begin.
