Pilot ‘looking for lens’

NZPA-Reuter Los Angeles Pilot Ralph Myers, absent without leave from the Army, said he was looking for a lost contact lens when his plane came within 46 metres of President Ronald Reagan’s helicopter, sources involved in the investigation said yesterday. Mr Myers’ pilot’s licence was revoked by Federal aviation regulators for careless and reckless flying after his Piper Archer plane entered restricted air space and approached the Presidential helicopter close to Mr Reagan’s California ranch on Thursday. The White House Chief of Staff, Howard Baker, said Mr Reagan was not aware of the incident and did not seem upset when he was told of it. The sources said Mr Myers, absent without leave from the Fort Lewis military base in Washington state for 12 days, told questioners a contact lens popped out while he was flying close to Santa Barbara.
