Last Sabbath in synagogue
Saturday will be a nostalgic day for the Jews of Christchurch. It will be the last Sabbath to be celebrated in the Gloucester Street synagogue that has served their small community for more than 100 years.
Cracks in the foundations of the old building have forced the congregation to find an alternative place of worship. They have bought a former Brethren Assembly hall in Durham Street, which is being converted into a new synagogue. The community plans to take with
them many of the fittings of the old synagogue, including the Ark of the Covenant, pews, bimah (reading platform) and stained-glass window, as well as some of the masonry and the external stone facade.
They hope to have the new synagogue ready for consecration by December, to coincide with the Jewish festival of Chanukha.
Christchurch residents will be able to view the old Gloucester Street synagogue during a special open day on Sunday.
