South Westland

Sir,—E. Poulsen (August 1) accuses me of wishful thinking for refusing to believe, in the absence of evidence, that the tiny and remote Haast mill cart run profitably. I mention evidence because the mill’s manager does not offer any. The day before Mr Poulsen wrote, “The Press” reported the closing of the Pukekura mill, near lanthe, because of losses and a glut of timber. Other Coast mills are also suffering. How does Mr Poulsen explain this? He claims that I would “be hard pressed to say the (South Westland) countryside has been destroyed.” I would, indeed, and I have never tried to. South Westland’s amazing beauty survives because it has largely escaped logging. That is why rich visitors love it. Until Mr Poulsen produces evidence that logging is profitable, and is more profitable than present uses such as tourism, I reserve the right to accuse him of wishful thinking. — Yours, etc.,

D. J. ROUND. August
