Training cuts queried
The Government’s cutbacks for industry training assistance were strangely contradictory to its emphasis on technical skills, said the president of the Textile and Garment Federation, Mr David Watson yesterday.
He said that in 1983 the Government’s contribution to industry training boards’ funding was cut from 90 per cent to 50 per cent and it was now planned to cut back to 40 per cent.
The federation supported the Access schemes but it seemed strange to cut back similar contributions to industry training he said.
“Training boards only cost $3.5 million a year while Access has an annual budget of $346 million,” he said. He said textile and apparel industry training boards provided a valuable service for training in specific industries and that it made good sense to continue supporting training board programmes. He said companies would be reluctant to train a common workforce if such assistance wej-e severed.
