Club achieves squash double
St Andrew’s completed the President’s Rosebowl-Kathy Hargreaves Shield double for women's open grade interclub squash after a very tight contest against Mount Pleasant on Tuesday evening. The grand final for the shield was only decided on a points countback after some hasty calculations on paper. Both teams won two rubbers each and seven games each, but St Andrew’s prevailed on total points won by just 95 to 92. The successful St Andrew’s combination over the two competitions was Freda Walker, Donna Church, Heather Lyon, Julie Quinn
and Chris Wood. In the grand final, Carolyn Viggers and Ann Harliwich collected wins for Mount Pleasant in the top half of the order but Lyon and Quinn matched those performances ' tor St Andrew’s at Nos 3 and 4. Lyon’s hard-fought win over Merle Holland preserved her unbeaten record for the season. Quinn played Mount Pleasant’s Heather Johnston in the final match of the night, able to concede less than nine points — and she came through. Christchurch took third place in the play-offs with a 3-1 win over Sumner which
was not at full strength.
Pool play began in the men’s open grade competition with Christchurch I, Lancaster Park and Burnside all collecting 10-pointers. Not all those matches were won without a struggle, however, Wayne Seebeck (Christchurch I), for instance, being pushed to 9-7 in the fifth by Frank Young (Christchurch II), while two players for both Park and Bumside required five games to beat their opponents. Linwood surprised with a win over Sumner on a countback of games, Gary Monk reversing an earlier loss to Tristan Franklin.
