Boat believed stolen
An overturned jet boat and trailer discovered in the Waimakariri are believed to have been stolen. The trailer was salvaged yesterday morning by North Canterbury Catchment Board staff but attempts by police divers to recover the boat failed. The trailer was without its registration plate and the vessel was similar to one reported stolen late last month. The vessel was well entrenched in the shingle, according to a police diver, Sergeant Geoff Scott. He said it had a white hull with a black bottom. “Above the jet unit at the back it had the word ‘Motor.’ It was like a transfer,” he said. Sergeant Scott said the current in the river was so strong he had to hold his mask in place. The trailer was found in the middle of the river about 600 m west of the motorway bridge.
The boat was about 50m downstream and closer to the south bank.
