12B or not 12B

New Zealand’s top-selling bra size is a 128, but manufacturers and retailers believe the average bust is bigger. Modern well-elasticised bras have plenty of stretch allowing women to say, squeeze in to a 12 when they should wear a 14, says Peter Styles, of Bendon. Bras now are less-structured and so women do not often get fitted. They tend to keep buying the same sized bra year after a year. Often a

woman who started off as a 128 when in her early 20s will automatically buy that size years after she may have changed shape. A fitting every few years is advised so that women get the best out of their bras — and figures. Wearing a bra stretched to capacity is not flattering and probably shortens the life of the garment. An admission that a bigger size is needed does more good than harm except to misguided vanity.
