Minister shot
NZPA-Reuter Manila No trace was found yesterday of the killers of a Philippine Government Minister, but the attack sparked calls by angry Congressional leaders for the removal of military control over the police. The assassination of Local Government Secretary Jaime Ferrer by a group of unidentified gunmen near his house on Sunday evening was the latest in a string of unsolved murders in Manila. Death squads of the Communist New People’s
Army — called “sparrows” for their speed — have murdered 27 policemen in and around the capital this year. Mr Ferrer, aged 70, was an outspoken supporter of civilian vigilante groups that have sprung up throughout the country. He had been named as a potential target by N.P.A. spokesmen. Some officials suggested, however, that the murder might have been part of a Right-wing plot to destabilise the Government of President Corazon Aquino. .. .
