District Court trials down

PA Wellington District Court trial courts returned almost a quarter fewer convictions last year compared with 1985, Statistics Department figures show. Of the 1986 total of 1978 charges, convictions were entered for 1276 — a decrease of 388 or 23 per cent. The percentage of convictions stood at 64.5 per cent against the previous year’s figure of 56.7 per cent. Convictions for violence were down 23 on the 1985 total and while there were 16 fewer convictions for offences against the person, six more for sex offences and one more for drinking offences causing death or injury. The biggest drop came in property convictions, which were 318 fewer than 1985, and drug convictions, down 34. The number of people sentenced in District Court trial courts fell from 592 in 1985 to 557.
