Arms accord meeting discussed

NZPA-Reuter Washington United States and Soviet officials are discussing a September meeting between the American Secretary of -State, George Shultz, and the Soviet Foreign Minister, Eduard Shevardnadze, as prospects for super-Power arms accord improve. The Soviet Ambassador to the United States, Yuri Dubinin, met Mr Shultz at the State Department yesterday and later, the official United States attitude was more positive than after their last encounter on July 10. United States officials said the two men discussed the possibility of

talks on arms reduction in Washington in September round the time that the United Nations General Assembly convenes in New York. The leader of the Soviet Union, Mr Mikhail Gorbachev, in what many saw as a significant concession, announced last week that he would withdraw Moscow’s demand to retain 100 medium-range nuclear warheads in Asia. United States officials welcomed the move and said it improved chances for a super-Power agreement eliminating medium and shorter-range nuclear missiles worldwide.
