Slice of luck for ship

PA Auckland A Danish ship which recently entered the Manukau Harbour by mistake had a slice of luck in crossing a treacherous bar, said the Auckland Harbourmaster, Captain Jim Varney. , He said yesterday that the Svenborg Guardian apparently crossed the bar through the dangerous north-west channel, which is no longer used by commercial shipping because of constantly shifting sands.

Captain Varney said the ship’s master had mistakenly entered the Manukau Harbour instead of the Waitemata, with no idea of the bar’s existence. Visibility was poor and conditions rough. “It was really luck,” Captain Varney told a meeting of the Auckland Harbour Board. “I told him he should buy a Golden Kiwi ticket.” Her destination was Waitemata Harbour, but a' lack of proper charts led the ship into the Manukau.
