Patrol with a difference
PA Auckland Former hard-core glue sniffers will soon be patrolling the grounds of Auckland’s troubleplagued Middlemore Hospital. Street kids who joined the New Zealand Legionnaires Academy volunteered to provide security for the hospital after a series of sex attacks on staff. The Auckland Hospital
Board decided to use the Army-styled academy after the latest attack when a medical student was kidnapped and raped. Up to 25 reformed street kids will patrol the hospital grounds between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. The group, who traded glue bags, earrings and jeans for 5 a.m. reveilles, short haircuts and Army training, will be hired, for
a three-month trial. The 17 to 23-year-olds, including women, will guard the hospital in teams wearing full uniform, but without weapons. “It’s the community that has kept the legionnaires’ heads out of water, so it’s time we gave something back,” said the com-mander-in-chief and South Auckland court worker, Dan Davis.
