PA Wellington The Democratic Party yesterday pledged to preserve North Island virgin forest and manage South Island native production forests "for sustained yield in perpetuity.” In its policy on forestry, released yesterday, (he party said that until recently New Zealand’s forests were mined, rather than harvested. “People and governments were blind to disturbed water relation-
ships, soil erosion, wind damage, the extinction of native plant and animal species, exotic conservation, the run-down of merchantable forest and the ignoble uses to which prime native timber were put” Democratic policy was to preserve “intact and inviolate” all remaining publicly owned virgin forest It also promised to reverse what it called an “exploitive” policy in South Island forests by careful management
