Upgrades for PDP-11
Digital Equipment Corporation has announced upgrade packages for the 16-bit PDP-11 computer range.
Customers will be offered the choice of moving to entry-level MicroVAX II systems or retaining their existing PDP-11 systems. Mr Chris Harker, general manager at Digital New Zealand, said that if a customer wanted to stay with the PDP there were a range of upgrade kits to enable older PDP and Micro-PDP systems to be upgraded to comparable performance with the most recent, high-end model of the MicroPDP--11 range.
“We have also introduced a field upgrade to allow MicroVAX I system users to upgrade to MicroVAX II performance while retaining their original software and hardware enclosures.”
The first PDP system was introduced 15 years ago and more than half a million systems are in use, with more than 600 in New Zealand.
“The PDP-11 was Digital’s first computer, has over 2000 software applications packages available, and is the most
popular and numerous in its class. Digital recognises its responsibility to protect this enormous customer investment and will continue to provide upgrades and performance enhancements.” Mr Harker said the PDP upgrade packages would include hardware, operating system software, documentation, hardware installation and full, one-year on-site hardware warranty. All upgrade packages will be installed by Digital’s Field Service engineers. Upgrade packages are available for PDP-11/23 PLUS, MicroPDP-11/23, MicroPDP-11/73 and Mi-croPDP-11/83 systems.
