Family celebrations make memories
“Living Space”

For many years I have collected precious memories and filed them away in my mind. They may have been episodes that have happened here in New Zealand or overseas. Either funny, sad, or warm, they always mean something special to me and often come to mind. It is always a privilege to be included in a family’s celebrations. Recently I was invited to a family birthday lunch at the Forget Me Not restaurant in Sumner. It was a very cold day, and teeming with rain but this nice restaurant in the centre of the Sumner township was warm and welcoming.
The blackboard lunch menu offered a more than adequate selection of salads, fish, curry etc. When asked why their highly. recommended steak was not on the menu, they immediately offered to make it available. The six of us all had a delicious meal, finishing with our choice of either homemade icecream or lemon cheese cake. The closeness of a family group added another
precious memory to my file.
• • • Cavalier Carpets have brought me some excellent sample books of their Celebrity collection. There is a choice of 500 plain colours. They also have a minimum of 25 basic, small, mainly geometric designs that can be made in three colourways. This makes it possible to
have a tone-on-tone design, or something much more definite in the colourway of your choice. The quality of the Celebrity range is commercial, a 520 z, extra heavy duty, 100 per cent wool carpet. Nevertheless it is ideal for top domestic use. Minimum requirements for special colourways and designs are 15 lineal metres.
Q Could you please help us with some idea of how to divide a room? We have two daughters who used to get on together so very well. Since one has gone to secondary school there has been nothing but arguments and fights. Their room is not large enough to divide with a wall, but I am desperate, and something must be done. I do have sympathy with them as my oldest daughter works very hard and is very tidy. The young girl picks up things very quickly and does not need to work so hard. She is also untidy. I would appreciate any help or suggestions you
AThank you for your letter. Unfortunately, you have not given me the measurements of the room. I am sure it is only a phase your daughters are going through, but I do understand how upsetting it must be for you. From the plan, I note there is little storage space in the room. I suggest you obtain a large, two door, old-fashioned wardrobe. Place this where you wish to divide the room. Attach a desk on one side for your oldest daughter. Above this have open shelves, ideally a bookcase wiith shelves for both girls. Paint the back of the wardrobe, or cover it with fabric. This will make an ideal area for your younger daughter’s drawings or posters. Later you could attach a free-standing desk. I hope these suggestions have been of some help to you.
Qi have a query about choosing a curtain fabric for our spare bedroom. The room has been newly carpeted in Stevens Bremner’s, Earth
Olive, Super Intrigue. The walls of the bedroom are painted in Resene Frost. This is a cream, tinted green. The ceiling is Spanish White, and the skirtings, windows and wardrobe doors are rimu. The bedspreads are new Indian cotton, colour Rajput Geranium. The dressing table and towel racks are all colonial styling, stained to enhance their
natural colour. The room gets afternoon sun, and seems to require a pattern — a floral would be nice. The Curtain will be just below the window as a bed runs along the windows. We are restricted by price to a certain extent I await your suggestions with eagerness. G. G., Kalkoura. AThank you for your
drawings, plans, and samples. Your guests will certainly enjoy their room and feel very comfortable. I have chosen two fabrics for you, both with geranium pink and the olive green of your carpet. Wilson Fanfare is quite a modern fabric, and very smart. The chevron design has three pinks, black, navy, blue, olive green and gold. Wil-
sons sth Avenue Fanfare C 2574 at $47.30 a metre, including GST. The other fabric is very pretty, with flowers on a white background. The geranium tulips are lovely — Wilsons Stirling, $19.70 a metre, including GST. I suggest you take out the colours of the fabric of your choice for cushions on the beds. Enjoy your decorating
