Teacher trainees to protest
Teachers’ College trainees throughout New Zealand will strike on Thursday in protest about their pay, which they say should be on a par with other first-year Government trainees. Most teacher trainees receive the tertiary assistance grant of $4l a week, with some eligible for an additional accommodation
grant of $37 a week. Ms Nicki Wrighton, of the Teachers’ College trainees’ executive, said first-year soldiers received $13,700 annually, and traffic officers got $19,000. Teacher trainees will be in central Christchurch on Thursday to talk to the public, and to march to the Education Department in Victoria Street.
