DON FURNER, the Australian rugby league coach, can expect some heckling at home if his players fall to beat the Kiwis at Brisbane next Tuesday night. His son, David, has already achieved victory over a New Zealand football team this month. Last Saturday David Furner kicked two penalty goals and a conversion for the Australian under-17 rugby union team in its 16-3 defeat of its New Zealand counterpart at Wellington. ANTHONY DALZELL was the person to prosper most by the departure of Dale Atkins midway through the second half of Canterbury’s rugby match against Marlborough on Tuesday. Dalzell, usually a flanker, replaced Atkins at No. 8 and he scored Canterbury’s last two tries after scrums near the opposition’s line. Dalzell has now scored in all three appearances for Canterbury this season. ANOTHER CONTENDER has emerged to challenge Tom Hadfield and Phil Orchard for the New Zealand rugby league test try-scoring record which they share, with 15 each. James Leuluai and Dane O’Hara, who were not required for the short tour to Australia and Papua New Guinea, will seemingly remain on 14, where they have been joined by Hugh McGahan. The latest to reach double figures is Dean Bell, whose two tries at Port Moresby last Sunday, took his total from 17 tests to 10.
