Bomb kills police Basque separatist guerrillas killed two Spanish paramilitary policemen and severely injured two others when a bomb planted on the side of the road ripped through a patrol car. The attack was the latest in a series of guerrilla attacks on State targets in the Basque country. — Onate, Spain. Rebels kill troops At least 14 soldiers were killed when communist rebels ambushed troops pursuing them in the northern Philippines. The death toll was the highest suffered by the military in a single battle

against the rebels since President Corazon Aquino declared “total war” against insurgents and ordered the military to produce results. — Tuguegarao, Philippines. Pilot visited in jail A West German embassy official in Moscow visited teen-age pilot, Mathias Rust, in prison for the third time since he was detained after landing a light plane near Red Square in May. The official saw Rust twice during a visit by the pilot’s parents last month. Rust faces a maximum 10-year jail term if convicted of violating Soviet air space. — Moscow.
