Free emission testing soon

Free vehicle-emission testing for Christchurch cars and trucks may not be far off. According to the Canterbury United Council’s planning director, Dr Chris Kissling, negotiations with an unnamed oil company are advanced and it will offer the money to test the city’s cars and trucks free during a 10-day period. The test will indicate to motorists if their vehicles are in need of a tune-up to reduce pollutant emissions. The council is still seeking more money to fund its “Stop the Smog” campaign. It wanted to extend the programme to cover

vehicles ana outdoor rubbish fires, said Dr Kissling. The campaign has cost almost $40,000 to date. Dr Kissling believed the campaign’s targeting of schoolchildren would increase its coverage. “It will have its maximum impact in schools,” he told yesterday’s air pollution committee meeting. The council hopes schoolchildren will be able to assist it with “visual monitoring” of emission from chimneys which will give the council data on effectiveness of the fire-free days campaign.
