Market research questioned

The joint function of some agencies conducting public opinion surveys and market research programmes for the Government was questioned by Mr Bolger. Questions in Parliament by the National Party had shown that the Government was commissioning for its work the same agencies that were running independent political opinion polls. Heylen, the National Research Bureau, and

McNair had all won contracts to do specific polls for the Government. “Any responsible incoming Government must now introduce tough new rules to ensure that such abuses never happen aggain,” Mr Bolger said. Such rules would have to go far beyond market research. They would have to say precisely what was permissible in Government advertising and what was not.
