Orderlies want protective clothes

An orderly was’recently asked to carry a specimen from a suspected A.I.D.S. victim from one part of a hospital to another without any form of protection, delegates were told at the Hotel and Hospital Workers’ Federation national conference in Rotorua. Delegates at the conference said they were concerned about the lack of protection offered the orderly. Nursing staff in the ward and laboratory all wore protective clothing. 4 Delegates were also concerned about*fhe risk of cross-infection and said

that not enough action was being taken by hospital boards and area health boards to prevent its spread. The union planned to make its members aware of the risks involved with hepatitis B, M.R.S.A., and A.I.D.S. Delegates believed the use of contractors and falling standards of cleanliness were contributing factors in the spread of infection. The campaign would also make hospital workers aware of thfc preventive measures T that could be taken.
