N.Z. athletes bow out

By NZPA correspondent Zagreb, Yugoslavia The New Zealand Universities team wound up competition in the World Student Games yesterday with disappointing results in track events. Marguerite Buist finished seventh in the 1-o,ooom, with a time of 34 minutes 08.25 seconds and the 110 m hurdler, Paul Lloyd, finished similarly in his heat, recording 15.03 s to miss entry into the semi-finals. Lloyd’s heat was won by Keith Talley, of the United States, in 13.85. The New Zealander was eighteenth fastest, missing qualification by 0.33 of a second. Buist started her race well and was still prominent at the halfway mark but faded shortly after when the front runners took off. The race was won by Patty Murray, of the United States, in

after sprinting down the home straight to catch Huandi Zhong, of China, who finished just 0.38 of a second behind her. Third was Elena Uskova, of the Soviet Union with 33:14.71. Buist was carried off the track for medical attention after finishing and appeared to be suffering from exhaustion.

The Soviet Union continues to dominate the medal table with sixteen golds, nineteen silvers and eleven bronzes at the end of the sixth day of competition. The United States is second with 13, 10 and 11 and the Rumanians, the surprise packet, third with 12 golds. Six of the Rumanian golds have come from

their two . remarkable swimmers, Noemi Lung and Aneta Petrascoiu. Lung has been the swimming sensation at Zagreb, winning four golds and two bronzes. She has also broken three Games records, a good effort for the small 19-year-old whose best effort before these games was a bronze in the 400 m medley at the world swimming championships in Madrid last year. .< Petrascoiu has won two golds, two silvers and a •bronze. The 20-year-old won a bronze in the 200 m backstroke at the Los Angeles Olympics in 1984 —* the first Rumanian to win a swimming medal in an? Olympics. Lung and Patrascoiu combined to win a bronze as part of the 4X200m freestyle final yesterday being beaten by the United States (8:09.52) and the Netherlands (8:17.51) after recording 8:21.50.
