$136M spent on wool

PA Wellington Tourists spent about $136 million on woollen products last year, said Wool Board estimates. The board’s special products manager, Mr Bill Rushworth, said that the most popular items bought by foreign tourists were woollen handknit garments, and 25 per cent of the visitors bought an average of three each. Half a million sheepskin rugs were sold each year to about 20 per cent of ail tourists, while 12 per cent bought an average of two machine knitted garments each. Americans and Japanese were the main buyers.

Mr Rushworth said. > The market potential for woollens was expected to expand with the predicted increase in overseas visitors. Forecasts for 1990 showed that a million tourists would spend $2OO million on woollen products alone, he said.
