Union to rejoin Labour
PA Auckland Dairy workers are set to rekindle their relationship with the Labour Party in spite of “Rogernomics.” After 40 years outside the party fold, the national council of the Dairy Workers’ Union voted at its annual conference to reaffiliate with the party. The decision came in spite of the effects of the Government’s economic
policies on farming areas, said the union national secretary, Mr Colin Ridley. The union cut its ties with the party in 1947 over legislation forcing dairy workers to accept week-end work without adequate payments, Mr Ridley said. The union’s 6000 members would be asked at regional meetings to endorse the decision.
