Wellington wins rugby

PA Wellington Wellington began its defence of the national first division rugby title with an error-ridden 18-12 win over Counties at Athletic Park yesterday. The titleholder has a long way to go before it can reasonably be expected to retain the unbeaten record it achieved last winter. Counties showed that with a relatively young and inexperienced side it is going to make its mark this year.

The light rain that fell throughout ruined any prospect of the sort of rugby Wellington and Counties are traditionally respected for. It was certainly one of the most unattractive games between

the two unions in many years. Both sides scored a try, one to Counties’ Mark Moore, celebrating his birthday. The other went to the Wellington wing, Lolani Koko, who threaded through three tackles to score 18 minutes into the second half. The decisive difference in the match was the goal-kick-ing of the All Black fullback, John Gallagher, who kicked four penalties and a conversion for Wellington. Scorers.—

Wellington 18: Lolani Koko a try, John Gallagher four penalties and one conversion. Counties 12: Mark Moore a try, Lindsay Raki a penalty, Greg Thomas penalty and conversion. i
