Too much water in pool too soon

When excavators began digging a 3m deep hole yesterday for a diving pool at the Millners Underwater Centre in Victoria Street, it started filling with water about eight weeks earlier than bargained for.

The workers struck an underground spring and with the water bubbling out of the

ground at a rapid rate, it was not long before a half-metre depth of water was in the pool. The owner of the diving complex, Mr Paul Millner, said the excavators had expected to strike a little water, but not a spring. They began pumping the pool out yesterday, and expected the

problem to be solved by this morning. The centre opened with a diving shop in April, and the hole, 7m x 8m wide and 3m deep, is for an indoor, heated diving pool. Mr Millner said that at present he employed seven instructors to teach six-week diving courses. The practical

sessions were run at the Queen Elizabeth II Park pool and the theory at Millner’s Colombo Street rooms. The new $75,000 complex will include lecture rooms, allowing the diver training to be incorporated under one roof. The centre is expected to be completed in eight weeks.
