Vintage note
PA Nelson A message from the past has been found on windswept Wharariki Beach near the bottom of Farewell Spit. A farm worker, Wayne Robertson, was with a group of friends when he found a bottle about 2km south of the main Wharariki Beach. A faded pencilled ’note dated 42 years ago and sealed in a thick glass bottle, was found where the forces of wind and sea had begun to erode a sandbank along the coastline. The note gave the names, serial numbers and wartime address of two R.A.F. airmen. The note, dated July 25, 1945, was hard to deci-
pher in places, but appeared to say: “Whoever gets this bottle and message please write to the following airmen: 190358 A. C. Curran P, Stn. H.Q., A.P.O. 8390; 190275 AC. Ross B, same address. With best wishes from the R.A.F.” The bottle was sealed with a tapered cork, rammed halfway down the neck. Although some water had got inside, the bottle had to be broken to get the message.
