Local body law
PA Wellington Legislation designed to stop local authorities conducting much of their meetings behind closed doors was passed in Parliament yesterday. The Local Government Official Information and Meetings Bill extends the principles of the Official Information Act, providing the same level of access to official information held by local bodies
as to the central Government. Some local authorities had been going into committee, with the public and press excluded, whenever they felt like it, said the Minister of Local Government, Dr Bassett, when the bill was introduced last year. Now going into committee would be the last resort, and subject to a review by the Ombudsman.
