Sheep butchered in paddock

A Little River farmer, Mr Cliff Vanstone, suspects 15 of his sheep were recently stolen and butchered for their meat in a paddock near Lake Forsyth. Three sheepskins with heads and ear tags still attached were found on Friday in the lake and a muster showed 15 sheep were missing from the flock of about 400. The missing sheep, which included some

valuable, mixed-age Romney stud ewes, were worth at least $750, said Mr Vanstone. The skins recovered from the lake showed that the sheep had been skinned expertly which suggested they had been slaughtered for their meat, he said. Constable Robert Lee, of Akaroa, said no other similar cases had been

reported in the district recently.
