Aust. market easier

NZPA-AAP Sydney The Australian sharemarket closed easy yesterday as profit-takers trimmed Monday’s post-election gains following mixed signals from offshore. Gold stocks continued to attract support following a $U52.65 rise in bullion to $U5446.65 an ounce. But a lack of overseas investors, higher-than-expected CPI figures in New Zealand and a lower local currency dampened sentiment.

Turnover was heavy as 129.22 million shares worth sAust23s.Bs million changed hands. Rises equalled falls, reflecting the market’s ambivalence. Interest was largely focused on gold issues in line with higher bullion prices, but volumes were generally thin. Consolidated Exploration added 10c to 500 following announcements on Monday by lEL and Western Mining they had increased their stakes in the company.

Hawk Investments rose 30c to 520, while Renison lost 40c to 1060 and Whim Creek 20c to 1180. The positive sentiment failed to spread to other resource stocks, with many key issues falling prey to profit taking. Heavyweight MIM lost 9c to 266 as North Broken Hill dropped 7c to 338. Robert Holmes a Court’s Bell Resources proved to be the exception, advancing 16c to 498 as 6.71 M shares worth 532.58 M changed hands. The rise comes on top of the company’s announcement it had increased its stake in U.S. oil giant, Texaco, to 9.5 per cent. Bell Resources’ parent, Bell Group, was also up 6c to 856. BHP and Elders IXL were lower, the first falling 5c to 1010 and the latter 3c to 485. Industrials were mixed with BTR Nylex providing one of the few high spots, gaining 40c to 1070 as Lend Lease lost 30c to 1600
