Garnish Welcome to our weekly comment on wine, food, and personalities, keeping you up to date on who's drinking and eating what, and how and where they should be dining! And what a week it's been! It's been extremely busy. Old and new guests spent evenings with us; dining, wining and making bright conversation. It’s always a delight to make and renew acquaintances — and to know they've enjoyed themselves. On Saturday Mr Paul Hamilton, of Dunbar Topp Real Estate, entertained guests and on Monday we witnessed an all too rare sight ... the arrival of guests in two chauffeur-driven limousines. The managing director of Shin . Etsu Chemical Company dined with managers of the Mitsubishi Chemical Division and entourage. We were assured they had a lovely evening — helped no doubt by being picked up in such style. We had a right royal rumpus one night this week... a well known male media personality was dining with friends, and a "very fine time was being had by all," thank you very much. Unfortunately, our media star started to tell a rather risque story about someone he had once interviewed. Unfortunately? Well, it appears that the interviewee’s brother was sitting at the next table, couldn't help overhearing the highvolumed tale and leapt to the defence of his sibling. The ensuing exchange was not pleasant, I can assure you. Needless to say the racounteur backed down, but not before we'd had to sooth ruffled feathers by pouring port on the troubled waters. A far more elegant and enjoyable affair was the special dinner to celebrate Singapore Airlines' 40th anniversary. Mr Murray Wild of the airline's Christchurch office hosted the evening with the managing director from Singapore. The whole evening was a triumph. Guests were greeted by our red carpet inviting them inside to our roaring fire and tres scrumpteuse (pardon the French) complimentary canapes. The vintage Dorn Perignon was greatly enjoyed and followed by a regal 1980 Chateau Mouton Rothschild and a 1983 Grande Cru. The evening was rounded off by a wonderful 20-year-old Taylor*s Port. The menu consisted of six superb courses, and a special mention must be made about the little potato sculptures of the airline's insignia, deep fried to a deep gold colour. They decorated the main courses and drew many gasps of delight. The waiter rose to the occasion and wore tails for the evening. The floral decorations for the night were stunning... stems ofcerise and white orchids were especially flown in from Singapore. The table looked just wonderful. Table Settings And talking about tables, the table settings at Grimsby's are always given top priority. Our white German crockery is of an octagonal design and every table is set with show plates (underplates). These have a traditional black line and motif to complement our cocktail napkins which are placed when drinks are served. Our napery is glorious white, damask linen otf-set by blue napkins in silver napkin rings. To finish it off beautifully, brightly coloured orchids are flown in weekly from Thailand. Music We are pleased to announce we have a wonderful violin and piano duo who now play regularly on Saturday evenings. Bryan Botting and Peter Rainey are both very talented musiciansand are proving to be very popular. Our week-day pianist, Bette Dorn, is a delight to listen to and always draws favourable comments for her repertoire of romantic, mood, classical and popular music. Together they provide an elegant, warm and welcoming ambience for guests every night of the week. Well, that's all for now. (Except would Mr X — or is it Mister Y — please stop ringing about the identity of Madame Y's companion mentioned last week! Names have been erased from our register and nothing more shall pass these lips!) In the next Garnish gossip, we shall titillate you with details about our special dinner to be held soon, the building's history, comments on cheese, and much, much more! Cranmer Square, Cnr Kilmore and Montreal Streets. Open from 7 p.m. except Sundays. Phone 799-040
