A Japanese girl who earlier this year attended the Kirkwood Intermediate School helped set Form 2 pupils of Room 12 on the path to yet another winning entry in “The Press” travel page touragram contest. The class teacher, Mrs Julie McCaw, has been a keen touragram fan since they first appeared in 1976. Since then she has used them as class projects involving all pupils in research and presentation. Her class efforts have won many prizes over the 11 years. Last month, the touragram was based on Japan. Kirkwood’s correct entry was submitted framed by a string of 200 colourful paper cranes which, in Japan, are a sign of good luck. “The children were shown how to make the cranes by a Japanese girl who attended the class for six weeks last term,” said Mrs McCaw yesterday.
