No inquiry into grounding
Wellington reporter No formal inquiry will be held into the grounding of the fishing vessel Explorer Douglas near Akaroa on March 18, said the Minister of Transport, Mr Prebble, yesterday. The vessel grounded at Wainui Bay soon after leaving Akaroa Wharf about 5.15 a.m. On board were the skipper, Mr A. B.
Staats, and five crew members. The Explorer Douglas was refloated about 5.40 p.m. on the same day. A preliminary inquiry found that the vessel was in good mechanical order with no machinery or steering failure. Weather conditions were calm with slight winds and good visi-
bility. According to a statement made by Mr Staats, the autopilot had malfunctioned, Mr Prebble said. The vessel was not damaged and there were no serious injuries. As the facts of the incident had been clearly established, a formal inquiry would not be held, Mr Prebble said.
