Logistics support ship for Navy

PA Wellington The Navy is buying a multi-purpose logistics support ship as the first step in the modernisation of its fleet, says the Prime Minister, Mr Lange. The vessel would have the capacity for two medium helicopters, which would be a “significant utility” for the work the Navy did in helping with natural calamities throughout the Pacific, Mr Lange said at his weekly press conference. In recent years, earthquakes, cyclones and volcanic activity had damaged many of the Pacific Islands. “To have that type of. ship will provide direct support in rather perilous situations,” he said. A fleet tanker, designed to service the Navy’s vessels, would be delivered by the end of the year, and the Navy would also be replacing its frigates “one-on-one” during the 19905. An announcement about a commitment with Australia to further develop an “ocean surface competent” vessel would be made within the next two days, Mr Lange said.
