NZPA-AAP Sydney The Australian sharemarket closed strongly yesterday at record levels, but . off the day’s highs as lateprofit taking took the edge off early gains. Brokers said investors gave the re-elected Hawke Government the thumbs up in early trading, flooding the market with buying orders. But late selling emerged as September share price index futures plummeted 31.5 points from the day’s high and investors became uncertain as to the market’s true strength. Turnover was a solid 111.97 million shares worth sAust24l.74M as rises outnumbered falls by about three to two. Market leaders across the boards led the charge, with secondary stock attracting only thin interest. Industrials to post significant increases included Adsteam, up 20c to 870 and Pacific Dunlop, up 16c to 520. Ten cent gains took Bell Group to 850, ICI to 510 and BTR Nylex to 1030. Elders added eight to 526 while Bell Resources was strongly sought following news it had increased its stake in troubled U.S. oil major Texaco Inc. The Holmes A Court resources arm added 4 to 402. However, patchy demand saw several sectors fall prey to profit taking, including banks and finance. Westpac lost 2 to 526 as the ANZ fell 5

to 435.
