Depot arson bid could have cost lives —police
PA Gisborne An attempt to blow up a truck loaded with highoctane fuel could have resulted in a disaster with loss of life, the Gisborne police say. Detective-Sergeant Eric Newman said a jersey was set on fire and a trail of diesel had been laid to the truck on Sunday night. Fortunately, diesel does not burn easily, and the fire did not carry from
the jersey to the truck. The arson attempt was discovered yesterday morning. The police did not name the depot. After gaining entry, the offenders had interfered with two trucks, a trailer unit and three mini-tank-ers containing diesel. The diesel was removed from one of the mini-tankers. The police believed the offenders were young and that they got the idea from either television or a video film.
Security at the depot was good, with barbedwire fence surrounding the compound, floodlighting and regular security patrols. “This could have been a serious disaster, with loss of life,” DetectiveSergeant Newman said. “There would certainly have been loss of life of the persons who did it. “They were obviously young kids who had not considered the consequences.”
