‘The Runaway Dog’
By

of Rangiora Miss Rottemeir, the owner of Shirley the white dog, was going away on a holiday. She was leaving Shirley alone. Shirley decided to run away, for the strict owner was leaving her to the mercy of the old backyard. So off Shirley set, with a bone in her mouth. She went down one street, then another. Then she saw a cat. It was an old friend of hers, but the cat started at Shirley. Shirley started to run but she tripped. With haste she got up and ran, but the cat saw what she was doing and zoomed round the corner and came face to face with the dog.
With a startled fright, Shirley went guiltily home and hopped in her kennel. Alas, with her great fright she had lost her pink ribbon. Shirley decided to go and look for it. As soon as she got onto the road she saw a lady with a pink ribbon in her hair. Shirley was sure that it was hers, so Shirley started to bark at the lady. The lady jumped with fright and as she did so her ribbon fell out. Shirley picked it up and placed it on her head and marched proudly home. Miss Rottemeir was waiting at home for her dog. So Shirley had a bath and so did her pink ribbon.
