Fijian arms bid criticised
PA Wellington Attempts by Fiji’s military regime to buy arms from South Korea and Taiwan after the suspension of military aid from New Zealand and Australia has been condemned by the New Zealand Coalition for Democracy in Fiji.
It called on the Government to make representations to both South Korea and Taiwan to avoid any interference in the South Pacific and not supply any arms to Fiji. Its spokesman, Mr Jone Dakuvula, said the coalition strongly deplored the action which showed the regime was determined “to use brute force to crush the ever-growing resistance of the people in Fiji.”
Such a move would only escalate repression, confrontation and suffering, he said.
“It is not surprising that Colonel Rabuka (the military leader who led the May coup in Fiji) is seeking military aid from countries which have little sympathy for human rights, justice and democracy.”
