Flu tests new centre
A flu epidemic caught the new after-hours medical service unprepared at the weekend when about 600 people needed to see a doctor.
Dr lan Robertson, a spokesman for the co-opera-tive that runs the service, said it had been very busy.
“We were a bit embarrassed on Saturday because there were not enough doctors to cope with the number of people.”
The service had not wanted people to wait to see a doctor for more than 15 minutes at the surgery and an hour for a house call, said Dr Robertson.
“But on Saturday, we were 45 minutes behind at the surgery and three hours behind with calls.” Two extra doctors had been rostered on yesterday and had just kept ahead of the work, he said. The problem had been finding them a room to work in.
“Next week-end by hook or by crook we will have a couple of extra doctors rostered and a couple of extra rooms — we will do it somehow.”
