More staff losses at Outbak

Twelve Clothing Trades Union members employed by Outbak Clothing Company will lose their jobs at the end of the month.

Mr Paul Watson, assistant secretary of the Canterbury Clothing Trades Union, said he hoped a redundancy agreement for the workers would be settled tomorrow. He said workers at the factory were surprised at the announcement, made on July 1, because management had earlier indi-

cated that prospects looked good.

The redundancies come 18 months after nine other lay-offs at the company. “Since then the company appeared in good shape ... with new premises, plant and machinery,” Mr Watson said.

He said it was surprising given the success in the leather industry and high demand for leather garments.
