Aust. ends sharply higher

NZPA-AAP Sydney The Australian sharemarket closed sharply higher yesterday, but off the day’s highs as early scrambling for stocks across the boards was replaced by profit taking. Brokers said strong gains in share price index futures and a modest rise in bullion prices fuelled early optimism in the market. However, profit-takers entered the market in late trade. Turnover was 134.54 million shares worth sAust323.ls million, and rises outnumbered falls by five to three. Blue chip industrial stocks were keenly sought, with both developers and the insurance sector well up.
