Today is a bootee day

Today is National Midwives Day and to celebrate it Canterbury midwives will give each baby born in the region a pair of bootees.

Ms Karen Guilliland, chairman of the Canterbury Midwives Section, said there were about 140 midwives in Canterbury working in hospitals and the community. Midwives had an important role as a woman’s advocate during pregnancy and after birth, she said.

“A midwife makes sure a woman gets what she wants during pregnancy and until about six weeks after birth. Midwives are there for support and are also involved in family planning and gynaecologi- “ cal problems.” '»
