Parole move lost
PA Wellington An attempt to give courts the power to set a non-parole period for persons sentenced to life imprisonment was defeated in Parliament yesterday. The Violent Offences Bill (No. 2), which passed through its committee stages yesterday, increases the minimum time for serving a life sentence from seven years to 10 years. The amendment was defeated by 36 votes to 26.
