Scholarship for banned player

PA Palmerston North Darren Barnett’s banning from playing basketball in New Zealand has landed him a juicy United States university scholarship. Barnett, the 21-year-old captain of the Palmerston North national league team, was suspended until September, 1990, for striking a referee in a club game in the city recently. He will leave on August 25 for a two-year scholarship at Hartnell College in Salinas, California, 300 km north of Los Angeles. It is a division one junior college whose team plays in the Caifornia State championships. Barnett said he would

have stayed in Palmerston North had it not been for the suspension. “Getting banned pushed me into going for a scholarship. My aim has been to play for the New Zealand senior team but when I was banned the whole dream went down the tubes. “I want to come back and be a very good player; most Kiwi players making the New Zealand team are coming out of the United States.” He said basketball was his life and getting banned was the last straw. The banning applies only to New Zealand and Barnett will not appeal against it because he believes he cannot win.
