Campaign opening in Chch on July 27
By
OLIVER RIDDELL
in Wellington Parliament will rise on Tuesday, July 21, for the election campaign to begin in earnest. This was announced by the Leader of the House, Mr Palmer, yesterday. The date enables planning for the campaign to become more definite. The National Party has indicated it plans a fourweek campaign. The Labour Party indicated a three-week campaign. The Prime Minister, Mr Lange, plans to open Labour’s campaign in Christchurch on Monday, July 27. National has decided
when and where it will begin its campaign but has not yet announced the details. Mr Palmer said valedictory speeches for retiring members of Parliament and the party leaders would be held on July 21. That means Parliament will finish its business next week, but exactly what day will depend on whether the Government takes urgency to ram through the outstanding legislation. Mr Palmer said that before then there would be three new bills introduced. The Government hoped
to complete all 14 bills on the Order Paper, but he said two might not make it — the Area Health Boards Amendment Bill No. 2 and the Appropriation Bill. There were also bills before select committees where public submissions were being made on them. Mr Palmer said he had no information on the progress likely on these before the House rose. Some 28 bills are still before select committees with two — the Auckland Airport Bill and the Children and Young Persons Bill — being particularly involved and contentious.
