Wee Jimmy and Riwai likely double combination at Waimate

Wee Jimmy from Washdyke and Riwai from Wingatui form a likely double combination at the Waimate District Hunt Club meeting tomorrow. Wee Jimmy is trying for his third win in four starts in the Dominion Brewery Handicap where the widish draw may not be enough to prevent him repeating his Ashburton victory just over three weeks ago. The Mean Machine and Great Zeal, both subsequent winners at Riccarton the following week, chased him home on that occasion and talent of that calibre does not appear thick on the ground in this week's lineup. Wee Jimmy also has

form on the Waimate track, a turning circuit which has proved a problem for the long striders in the past. Baline Gold, useful on winter tracks, Come True and Berber look the obvious dangers, the last named scoring impressively at Riccarton, while Hayle could make a lively fist of his return to flat racing after meeting misfortune in his recent hurdling attempts. Come True has shown considerable improvement this winter and must be rated an upset chance on this track.

The Wingatui stable of Cliff Reese-Jones is enjoying a good run at present and Riwai is poised to add

to it in the second leg the Ben Area Handicap.

Riwai chased home The Mean Machine last time out at Oamaru after getting well back in the field, and the more recent form of the latter suggests the Palatable gelding will be hard to beat. Native Era has been a consistent winter performer and looks the big danger and Shifnals Mate and Valley of Wales also appeal. The latter ran out of his class at Timaru and has produced some good sprinting form at times in soft footing. A fresh Signum with the services of Chris Johnson looks the best of the others.

Barr 57.0 Useful performer on winter footing from the Alan Jones stable last year and recent form suggests she will be hard to beat here in spite of wide barrier draw. Respected. 2 7108 Take Cover 6 A. Tait 56.5 Freshened since Gore failure last month and checked time before at Wingatui. At home in softer footing and could make bold bid. 3 8191 Wee Jimmy 12 R. Bruce 56.5 Capitalised on charmed run to win well at Ashburton after previous failure on home track. Has been placed twice on this course and looks one of the top chances. 4 3621 Berber 7 55.5 Has come solid in recent months and bold winning effort at Riccarton last start. Inclined to get back early which could be against him here but must be rated. 5 0216 Come True 11 55.5 Failed when stepped up to 1600 m at Timaru last time out but form up to 1400 m prior to that has been solid. Might not have too many stamina problems on the turning track. 6 3000 Scorsby 9 D. Wadley 54.5 Recent form unimpressive. Wins were recorded over 1600 m at Hokitika and were well spaced. Hard to see winning. 7 5806 Barrabbas 4 G. Davison 54.0 Useful galloper which looked on the improve last time out but place chances preferred. 8 6018 Benaro 5 M. Ritchie 54.0 Seems best fresh but no dash at Riccarton last time out after handy win three weeks previously at Wingatui. Pressed to win and place chances preferred. 9 7200 Hayle 3 C. Johnson 54.0 Last three outings have been as a hurdler failing to finish the course at Wingatui and Timaru. Before that had useful flat form mostly on firm footing. Up to this class at best. 10 7063 Kyolic 10 S. McCann 53.5 Wins well spaced but consistent placer at times and must be considered for the upset. Has raced well here previously. 11 8700 Marwitzer 2 B. Pellings3.s Has not fired on this campaign but should show some improvement here. Likes small tracks but hard to recommend just the same.

12 8308 Maxispot 13 G. Williams 53.5 Little appeal on recent form. 13 0594 Sweet King 8 J. Woledges3.s Fair fourth but seven lengths from the winner Napoleon Bonaparte over 1600 m at Washdyke last week. Has to improve. 14 7080 Tinder Box 1 J. Jamieson 53.5 No appeal. 15 0800 Kartel Lad 15 52.0 Big improvement needed. Race 7 D, T 3.10 BEN ARCA HANDICAP $2900; 1200 m 1 6712 Native Era 11 L. Broake 57.0 Wingatui-trained three-year-old which ran The Mean Machine to a nose at Oamaru last time out. Hard to beat. 2 3010 Red Rainee 6 56.0 Narrow winner at Timaru last month before failing badly at Oamaru. Take on trust. 3 3113 Riwai 10 L. Cameron 55.0 Impressive winner on both days of Queen’s Birthday meeting at Wingatui before finishing third behind The Mean Machine at Oamaru. Top chance on heavy track. 4 9600 Wind Break 9 T. Matthews 55.0 Form poor. 5 2402 Shifnal’s Mate 7 S. Allen 54.5 Run down after pacemaking, 1600 m, Wingatui, May 29. 6 6009 Signum 3 C. Johnson 54.5 Disappointing efforts at Nelson. Hard to like. 7 4376 Valley of Wales 8 R. Bruce 54.5 Good race against class 1 sprinters at Timaru last Friday. Will appreciate drop in class here and could be at false odds. 8 1900 Anzonetta 4 54.0' Resuming. Handles wet ground and capable of going well fresh. 9 8245 Travel Alone 5 J. Dowling 54.0 Fair runs at Wingatui over Queen’s Birthday week-end. Rough chance. 10 0899 Goodie Two Shoes 1 53.0 Failed to impress, yet again, at Timaru last Friday. 11 0098 Supreme Terror 2 .... G.
