Boxing back at Kaiapoi
Amateur boxing returns to Kaiapoi this evening when the Crichton Cobbers club stages a tournament in that township’s community centre. Experienced trainers and administrators cannot recall when Kaiapoi was most recently a venue for the sport. "Educated guesses” estimate it is about 30 years since a ring was erected there.
It is also believed to be the first time that Crichton Cobbers has scheduled a tournament beyond its own club. The tournament is an extension of what has been a reasonably successful venture into Friday night boxing events, and has attracted competitors from Nelson and Westport. Anton Neal (Nelson), who beat Hamish Milne (Bell’s gym) in Christ-
church last month, has been matched against Masilino Penei (Papanui). A Nelson heavyweight, Peter Lynch, will oppose Richard Currie (Spencerville), while Peter Rae (Nelson) meets Raymond Smith (Crichton Cobbers) in a middleweight contest.
One of the closest bouts should be that between Danny McNally (Dickson’s) and Anthony Woolcott (Papanui). McNally was a majority points winner when they met in a South Island Golden Gloves junior final five weeks ago. The well-performed Blair Rochford (Barry’s) is to clash with Greg Coles (Crichton Cobbers), while the Newsome brothers, Hemi and Lincoln, are pitted against Jason Hay (Crichton Cobbers) and Gavin Wallace (Barry’s), respectively.
