Steam trains

Sir, —The article by Mr McQueen (July 6) seems to bring out the problem of steam locomotives being old and unreliable. There is nothing wrong with steam as a motive power and it would be a good move on the part of N.Z. Rail to build some “replicas,” using plant and equipment which probably exists. As a training exercise for young engineers, and with the help of the last survivors of those who knew how to build locos, N.Z.. Rail would then have a real tourist attraction. Older readers will remember that there is already a partially built line from the West Coast to Nelson. If this could be finished to modern standards, and with strategically placed five-star accommodation, this line, plus the Midland and East Coast, would provide one of the best scenic trips in the world. — Yours, etc., P. J. PASCALL. July 6, 1987.
